Most gyms hand you a key fob and point you toward the equipment.

We do things differently.

Every new member who joins Wayfinder Fitness & Nutrition goes through an on-ramp process before stepping into their first group class. It’s not a formality. It’s not a box we check. It’s one of the most important things we do — and it’s a big part of why our members make real, lasting progress instead of spinning their wheels in the first few months.

This post breaks down exactly what our on-ramp program looks like, why we built it the way we did, and what you can expect as a new member walking through our doors for the first time.

Why On-Ramp Exists

Let’s start with the problem it solves.

Most people who join a gym — even people who have worked out before — don’t have a strong foundation in fundamental movement patterns. They may have exercised plenty. But squatting with a barbell, hinging properly for a deadlift, pressing overhead safely, and moving through a kettlebell swing with good mechanics are skills. And like any skill, they need to be taught before they can be applied effectively under load or intensity.

When someone skips that foundation and jumps straight into group classes, a few things tend to happen. Movements feel uncomfortable or confusing. Confidence takes a hit. The risk of injury goes up. And instead of feeling empowered by their first few weeks, they feel behind — like everyone else knows something they don’t.

On-ramp closes that gap before it opens.

By the time a new member walks into their first group class at Wayfinder, they already know the movements. They’ve already worked with a coach one on one. They already understand how the class is structured and what to expect. They walk in feeling prepared — not like a fish out of water.

That changes everything about the early experience. And the early experience is what determines whether someone sticks around long enough to see real results.

What On-Ramp Looks Like at Wayfinder

Our on-ramp program is a series of five 45-minute sessions with a Wayfinder coach. Sessions are conducted in a small, focused setting — anywhere from one on one up to a group of four — which means you get real coaching attention, not just instruction in a crowd.

These sessions run alongside group classes, not before them. So while you’re building your foundation in on-ramp, you can also start experiencing group classes at the same time. The two work together rather than one being a prerequisite for the other.

Here’s what gets covered across those five sessions:

Foundational Movement Patterns

Everything we do in on-ramp is built around the fundamental human movements that show up in our programming week after week. We’re not teaching tricks or one-off skills — we’re building the movement vocabulary you’ll use for as long as you train with us.

That includes:

Squat patterns — bodyweight squats, goblet squats, front squats, back squats. Learning how to sit into a squat with a neutral spine, proper knee tracking, and appropriate depth is foundational to almost everything we do.

Hinge patterns — Romanian deadlifts, conventional deadlifts, kettlebell swings. The hip hinge is one of the most important and most commonly misunderstood movement patterns for everyday adults. Getting this right protects your lower back and unlocks a huge range of strength work.

Push patterns — push-ups, dumbbell presses, barbell overhead press. Pressing movements build upper body strength and shoulder stability. We teach them in a way that’s safe, scalable, and appropriate for your current shoulder health.

Pull patterns — ring rows, dumbbell rows, pull-up progressions. Pulling movements are often underdeveloped in people who are new to structured training. We address this early because balanced push/pull strength matters for posture, injury prevention, and long-term performance.

Carries and core work — farmer carries, suitcase carries, planks, and functional core movements that build real stability rather than just surface-level aesthetics.

Equipment Familiarity

Barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, pull-up rigs — the equipment in a functional fitness gym can feel overwhelming if you’ve never used it with intention.

On-ramp demystifies all of it. By the end of your five sessions you’ll know how to load a barbell, how to choose an appropriate kettlebell weight, how to set up a pull-up bar modification, and how to navigate the equipment in our gym with confidence.

Scaling and Modification

This is one of the most valuable parts of on-ramp that most people don’t expect.

Every movement in our programming can be scaled or modified. That’s not a concession — it’s a feature. It’s how we make functional fitness accessible to a 25-year-old athlete and a 65-year-old beginner in the same class at the same time.

In on-ramp you’ll learn what scaling looks like for you specifically. If a barbell squat isn’t appropriate right now because of a knee issue or limited mobility, we’ll find the version that is. If overhead pressing is off the table because of a shoulder history, we’ll work around it. And you’ll learn how to advocate for yourself in a group class setting so that your coach always knows what you need.

Class Structure and Culture

The last thing on-ramp teaches is harder to quantify but just as important: what to expect from a Wayfinder class.

How the warm-up works. How the strength piece is structured. How the workout is coached. How to read the board. How to keep your own score. How the community operates before, during, and after class.

By the time you walk into your first group class, none of this is a mystery. You’ve already done it in a smaller, lower-stakes setting. You know what’s coming — and that confidence shows up in how you perform and how quickly you connect with the community.

The Investment

On-ramp is included in our intro package — $333 every four weeks for 12 weeks.

This package is designed to give you enough time to build a real foundation, develop genuine consistency, and start seeing the results that come from showing up and doing the work over a meaningful stretch of time. Twelve weeks is long enough to build a habit. Long enough to feel genuinely stronger. Long enough to know that this is something you want to keep doing.

It’s not a quick-fix package. It’s not a 30-day challenge. It’s a real investment in a real foundation — with real coaching support every step of the way.

Who On-Ramp Is For

The honest answer: everyone.

We’ve run on-ramp sessions with former college athletes who hadn’t trained in a decade. With 60-year-olds picking up a barbell for the first time. With moms coming back to fitness after having kids. With people who were nervous walking through the door and people who were eager to get started from day one.

The experience level doesn’t matter. What matters is that you get the foundation right — and that you have a coach in your corner from the very beginning to make sure that happens.

If you’ve been to other gyms before, on-ramp might cover some familiar ground. That’s okay. Learning the Wayfinder way of coaching these movements — and building a relationship with your coach before you’re in a group setting — is worth the investment regardless of your background.

What Happens After On-Ramp

After your five on-ramp sessions you’ll transition fully into group classes, small group training, or personal training — depending on what fits your goals and schedule best.

Most members continue with group classes and find that the foundation they built in on-ramp makes everything click faster than they expected. Movements that felt unfamiliar in week one feel natural by week twelve. Weights that felt heavy early on feel manageable. And the confidence that comes from knowing what you’re doing in a room full of people is something that shows up in every class.

Some members also choose to continue with personal training alongside group classes — especially if they have specific goals, injuries to work around, or simply want more one-on-one coaching attention as they build. That’s always an option and something we can talk through at any point.
